Best Sleeping Positions For Colic Baby!

The only way babies can communicate from an early age is through crying. It is the one technique that allows them to express they are tired, hungry, in pain and other similar things.

However, it can be frustrating to watch your baby constantly crying for no apparent reason.

Colic fits in your baby can increase your postpartum depression and fatigue and negatively impact your mental health.

Because of this, you can try various positions to help your baby sleep safely and soundly. Keep reading for the best sleeping positions and more information on colic.

Key Notes

  • Always ensure safety when finding the best sleeping position for a colicky baby
  • You can make them sleep on the side, stomach, or slightly inclined
  • If you feel drained, make sure you seek support
  • Use other techniques besides sleeping positions to help soothe your baby

The Best Sleeping Positions For Colic Baby

An important thing to note here is that a safe sleeping position is the best sleeping position for a colic baby.

For example, the AAP (American Academy of Pediatrics) suggests that babies should be safely placed in their own place such as cribs on their backs when they reach one year.

Even if you do this, you will notice that colicky babies will not fall asleep like this. There is a need to experiment with different sleeping positions and see what works for your baby.

Some options you have at your disposal include the following:

1. The Side Hold

If your baby does not sleep on their back, you can experiment with the side hold. When your baby is awake, you can put them on the side against your stomach.

Such a hold will ensure skin-to-skin contact, which will make them feel as comfortable as possible.

Then, you can place your forearm on their head and cradle their belly. It will soothe your baby and make them feel comfortable in your arms.

You can also keep trying this method till it works or move forward.

2. Slightly Inclined Position

Another option you have is to place your baby in a swing with a seat that is slightly inclined.

Rhythmic motions are known for helping babies calm down, which is why it can be an effective technique. Inclined bouncers are also a great choice if you want them to benefit from gentle bounces.

Such bouncing motions can also help your baby to receive some comfort.

Just make sure you are there at all times and supervise your baby until they have safely fallen asleep in a certain position.

3. Nestle Them In Your Neck

Is your baby still crying, despite trying out the above methods? Well, you can also rest their head between your chin and chest. Rock or gently sway from side to side or back and forth as you do this.

Softly sing a song as you do this or do anything else that provides comfort to your baby. The key is to ensure their comfort levels so that they can calm down and fall asleep as soon as possible.

4. Stomach Hold

Colicky babies need a lot of reinforcement to calm down, which is why this technique can also work best.

When your baby is awake, you can let them lay face down on your lap and gently begin massaging their back.

Soft massages, belly rubs, and back rubs can help them feel comfortable while they are trying to sleep.

You try and see which technique works best for your baby. Everyone is unique, and what works for someone else’s baby might not work for yours.

Additional Tips To Help Your Colic Baby

Apart from sleeping positions, you can also incorporate some additional practices throughout the day to help your colic baby.

These include the following:

Create A Calm Environment

You will notice that colic babies are most comfortable in quiet and calm environments.

It is up to you to create this environment at home so they can stop crying.

For example, you can:

  • Play soft music
  • Sing a soothing song
  • Dim the lights
  • Use a white noise machine
  • Keep them comfortable and warm

All of the above techniques will help them feel calm and comfortable at home. In the long run, this will lower the overstimulation and allow them to be at peace.

So, this should be your top priority with a colic baby.

Soothe Through Pacifiers

A pacifier can help the child to soothe themselves and regulate their emotions. Offering them a pacifier between nursing sessions can provide them with the comfort and relief they require.

Keep a pacifier close by whenever your child feels colicky after feeding sessions.

Try Gentle Swinging Or Swaddling Motions

Motion is needed for babies to regulate themselves and feel calm. You can experiment with swaying, rocking, and many other things.

If you plan on going out, you can also take your baby in a stroller to help them feel better with the gentle strolling motion.

Many parents also purchase baby slings or carriers to take their babies wherever they go or even at home.

Different motions can help soothe the child so you can find what works for your baby.

Take Help When Needed

We understand how difficult it can be to care for a colicky baby. As a new mother, you also have physical and emotional needs that you must take care of.

Whenever you feel drained or exhausted, you should seek support from your loved ones.

Mothers of colicky babies also join support groups. Such a group can help you share your journey with others and learn from them too.

Final Thoughts

Now that you know the best sleeping positions for a colic baby, you can try some of them and see if they work for your baby.

Remember that finding the right sleeping position is not the only thing you should be doing to help your colicky baby. Instead, it should be part of other strategies you are using to help your baby with their colic problems.
